1) What is absolutism?

An absolutism is when a ruler or a government that has all the power to control over people.

2) Explain the justification for absolutism referred to as the 'divine right of kings'.

A) The "divine right of kings" means that the king is born to a position with all the power.

3) List the causes of the rise of Absolutism in Europe.

A) The Protestant Revolution has weakened the church and the citizens needed a stronger leader to rule in 14th century. In 15th century, there were many merchants with rich and wealth. Therefore, the country needed a wise leader who could control of the wealth.

4) In your opinion, is absolutism a good way to rule? Can you think of a situation where it might be a positive thing?

A) In my opinion, absolutism is not really a good way to rule because the whole nation should not be controlled by one person. The leader will use the power as abuse which will affect the society. Eventually, it is going to lead to failing economy, society, and etc which will affect the citizens and the country.

1) Read 'The Enlightenment Spreads' pgs 202-205. Take detailed notes using CORNELL. While many monarchs were resistant to this change in thinking, some embraced it and wanted to be known as 'enlightened'. As such they have been referred to as 'Enlightened despots.' Make sure you really look at the 3 examples on pages 204-205 (Frederick the Great, Joseph II, and Catherine the Great).




When and where did they rule and what were their accomplishments?

A) There are three leaders who ruled over three various countries. Fredrick II (Fredrick the Great) has ruled over Prussia in 1740-1786. He granted many religious freedoms, reduced censorship, and improved education. Joseph II has ruled the country Austria in 1780-1790. He abolished serf dome and ordered the peasants to pay for their labor with cash. Catherine the Great has ruled Russia in 1762-1796 and she gave nobles absolute power over the serfs.

How did they reflect the new Enlightenment ideals?

A) The enlightenment ideals in many ways such as the rulers thinking logically and giving liberty (freedom) to the people. Also, they thought the humans can make improvements and progress.

2) In your summary, using what you have learned about the Enlightenment, answer the following question:

1. What are some of the ways that western culture changed in response to Enlightenment ideas? Be sure to mention the baroque, neoclassical, and classical styles.

A) The enlightenment ideas changed the society and way of life in Western and European culture. It influenced on music, art, and literature. The Europeans got a neoclassical art which gave a theme to Greece and Rome. The style was simple and clean. After the neoclassical art, classical art got in the way during the enlightenment.

3) Think about People TODAY who you would considered to be ENLIGHTENED thinkers. Research what they have done - justify your choice in a paragraph.

A) I would consider Bill Gates as a enlightenment thinker. He created a company called "Microsoft" which is one of the biggest IT corporations in the world. He created a operating system which developed the company to the world stage and leading corporation in the world. These days, Microsoft is used in many homes for desktops and laptops in has influenced many individual's living way of life.

Occupy Wall Street (Questions)

Why have people decided to Occupy Wall Street, and other financial areas in major cities the world over?

A) The people are protesting in the Wall Street because the minority of people (1%) are controlling the wealth of the common people in the public, however, the government is on the 1% of the people and the 99% of the common people are wanting to get equal to the 1% who are controlling the wealth.

Who might oppose those who are occupying Wall Street or demonstrating? Why are they opposing them?

A) The Wall Street is opposing to the government and to the corporations because of the loan and about "money". The people are struggling because the rich and the poor are widened so the rich people would not accept the riot.
